Barn Fellow

Chatham Hall is excited to begin the search for a Barn Fellow to begin July 2023. Chatham Hall—a girls’ grades 9-12 boarding and day school in southern Virginia—has been a leader in educating girls and preparing them for college since 1894. The Barn Fellow reports directly to the Director of Riding. This is a full-time, 12-month salaried position.

This position at Chatham Hall is designed to allow for the Fellow to immerse themselves in all the different aspects of a boarding school equestrian program. In addition to work at the stables, the Fellow will gain experience in Student Life through living in a dorm apartment and acting as a dorm parent. The goal of this program is to provide hands-on work experience for recent college graduates interested in a career in the horse world.

Responsibilities

  • Work side by side with the CH Barn Manager assisting in their daily duties and gaining experience in equine nutrition, veterinary care, equine health, grooming, pasture maintenance, inventory and billing
  • Work side by side with the Director of Riding to gain experience in development and fundraising, admissions and recruitment, advertising, communications, outreach, budgeting and staff management
  • Work side by side with the Assistant Director of Riding to gain experience in building student relationships, horse show management, off-site horse show planning and coaching, contracts and bills of sale, and IEA team management
  • Work side by side with the instructors to gain experience in lesson planning for both mounted and unmounted instruction, exercising and training of school horses, and traveling off property to horse shows
  • Manage the riding program’s social media accounts
  • Assist in the day to day operations of the Chatham Hall Summer Riding Camp
  • Work with the Office of Student Life as a member of the dorm staff​​​​​​​

Qualifications & Experience

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in relevant field preferred
  • Experience working with horses, preferably show experience
  • 1-2 years working in a similar field, preferred.
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities and organize workload
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds
