Member Notice: An Update on the Committee Reseating Process

Lexington, Ky.—Nov. 4, 2020—The U.S. Hunter Jumper Association, in accordance with its bylaws and policy, has undertaken the process of reseating all of its standing committees and working group task forces. The USHJA has 17 standing committees and 15 hunter and jumper working group task forces. The volunteers who generously give their time are the backbone of the USHJA.

Committee reseating is an important part of the governance process. It is an opportunity to include a broader representation and perspective among our members. It is important to be inclusive and bring new members onto our committees for the long-term health of the Association. “I welcome people who have the desire to give back to the industry through committee service,” says USHJA President Mary Babick. Potential volunteers are identified through the submission of a committee interest form or recommendation by other USHJA volunteers. This year, committee seats were offered to 30 new volunteers.

Much consideration is given to the reseating of USHJA’s committees. Reseating is a delicate balance between following USHJA’s bylaws and policy, and retaining the knowledge and talent of those who serve on the committees. At times, the reseating process can be challenging, especially for our most dedicated and long-term volunteers who have given many years of service. Committee chairs can serve either four two-year terms or two four-year terms for a total tenure of eight years. At the end of their tenure, they may remain on the committee to provide institutional knowledge and expertise to the incoming chair.

USHJA’s reseating process is designed to open the way for new talent and leadership from its membership, and to ensure that the organization finds the balance between institutional knowledge and opportunity. The USHJA thanks the many volunteers that give selflessly of their time and talent and welcomes our newest committee members.
