AON/USHJA National Championships Usher in New, Exciting Competition

Las Vegas—November 13, 2018—Today kicks off the inaugural AON/USHJA National Championships at The Las Vegas National, CSI4*-W. Offering various Hunter, Jumper and Equitation sections, the Championships are set to distribute more than 1,450 ribbons, 400 USHJA and sponsor gifts, 78 keeper trophies and seven perpetual trophies, 70 sponsor awards, 34 horse coolers and 26 medals over the course of the next five days. 

With qualifying that prioritized horse-and-rider combinations based on USHJA Zone points and Zone events, the championships bring together competitors from virtually every USHJA Zone across the United States.

The AON/USHJA National Championships will feature National Hunter Championships for Amateur Owners, Junior Hunters, Green Hunters, Pony Hunters, Adult Amateur Hunters and Children's Hunters, with each section offering $4,000 in prize money across two over fences classes, one under saddle and a Hunter Classic.

Jumper athletes will compete in the USEF/USHJA National Jumper Championships, with eight sections of Jumper competition from 1.10m to 1.40m for Junior, Amateur and Open Jumper competitors. Each jumper section will offer $12,000 in prize money across three classes including a $10,000 Grand Prix.

Equitation Championships will also be held for riders 14 and under and those 15-17, and a first-of-its-kind USHJA Affiliate Hunter Championships will be featured at fence heights of 2' and 2'6".

In addition to competitive opportunities, the Championships offer educational sessions with various experts. Sharon Classen, PT, ATC, CERP, who recently provided both equine and human physical therapy at the World Equestrian Games, will lead sessions on both topics. Diane Carney, grand prix rider, hunter rider, clinician, USHJA Certified Trainer, event organizer, commentator, course designer, USEF R judge, USEF International Disciplines Committee member and USHJA Board of Directors member, will lead a Judge with the Judge session that focuses on judging equitation. Farrier and veterinarian sessions will round out the educational programming. All sessions are free and open to exhibitors first come, first served. The educational session schedule is as follows:

  • Thursday, November 15, 5-6 p.m. - Sharon Classen Session
  • Friday, November 16, 4-5 p.m. - Sharon Classen Session
  • Saturday, November 16
    • 9-11 a.m. - Diane Carney Judging Session
    • 11 a.m.-12 p.m. - Farrier Session
    • 4:30-5:30 p.m. - Veterinarian Session
