USHJA Foundation to Offer More Scholarships and Grants in 2013

Since 2011 the USHJA Foundation has partnered with several USHJA Zones to offer the Scholarship & Grants Partner Program, as a means for zones to give back to their members in the form of financial assistance towards educational needs.

The USHJA Foundation continues to honor its pledge of contributing additional funds to help grow the cash value of each scholarship or grant that a zone bestows. During 2013, the Foundation welcomed an increased number of zone partners and increased zone donations, which in turn provides for more recipients and larger awards.

An Investment in Our Future: Each scholarship and grant awarded by USHJA Zones is one step closer to ensuring the future of the American Hunter Jumper sport. The Foundation believes these funds:

      • Help students who choose to rise to the challenge of obtaining a college degree.
      • Move future farriers and veterinary technicians a step closer to realizing their career dreams.
      • Aid professionals in becoming certified trainers.
      • Encourage young equestrians to reach higher levels of riding accomplishments via sources such as the Emerging Athletes Program’s curriculum with elite clinicians.
      • This year Zone 12 Hunter and Jumper Committees joined forces with the USHJA Foundation to offer one $1,000 EAP Grant, one $500 EAP Grant, one $700 TCP grant and $1,000 in General Grant opportunities. To learn more about the Zone 12 educational offerings please contact Chris Murphy at (859) 225-6714.

      • USHJA Foundation to Offer More Scholarships and Grants in 2012

In 2011, the USHJA Foundation partnered with several USHJA Zones to develop the Scholarship and Grants Partner Program. Designed to benefit the USHJA members with a cohesive and easy to use system, the program became an instant success and provided zones the opportunity to give back to their members in the form of financial assistance towards educational needs.

The USHJA Foundation continues to honor its pledge of contributing additional funds to supplement the various educational awards, which helps to grow the cash value of each scholarship or grant that a zone bestows. 2012 has welcomed an increased number of zones now partnering with the Foundation and an increase in the zone donations. This growth is a win-win to everyone. Zones are able to provide for more recipients and the awards can be more sizable.

        An Investment in Our Future

Each scholarship and grant awarded by USHJA Zones is one step closer to ensuring the future of the American hunter jumper sport. These funds can:

        • Help students who choose to rise to the challenge of obtaining a college degree- perhaps becoming the first in his/her family to attend college.
        • Move future farriers and veterinary technicians a step closer to realizing his/her career dreams.
        • Aid professionals in becoming certified trainers who might not otherwise be able to afford the expense of educational programs.
        • Encourage young equestrians to reach higher levels of riding accomplishments via sources such as the Emerging Athletes Program's curriculum with elite clinicians.

    • IHSA News
      • October Affiliate News: Intercollegiate Horse Show Association

Since 2008, the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association has contributed a portion of every regular-season entry fee from the Hunter Seat Novice Flat and Novice Western classes to Ride For The Ribbon, to support breast cancer awareness. According to IHSA Board of Directors member Naomi Blumenthal, for the 2010-11 season the IHSA raised $3,500.

Ride For The Ribbon, the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research, was launched in 1998 in memory of Spielman, who survived two bouts with breast cancer before losing her battle in November 2009.

Sharon van der Walde, with Ride For The Ribbon, said the original goal of $1 million has been amply surpassed: Support for the cause has raised $6 million.

"Ride For The Ribbon came about because of the friendship Stefanie and I shared and the fact that our daughters rode," said van der Walde. "When Naomi contacted me about wanting to help, I had no idea the impact she—and IHSA—would have! I'm overwhelmed that IHSA riders care enough to participate in Ride For The Ribbon classes."

This season, every IHSA Novice class during the school year will again contribute toward the fund. For more information on Ride For The Ribbon, visit www.ridefortheribbon.net or call (614) 563-6301.

    • August Zone 12 News
      • The Zone 12 Committee has developed a new horsemanship medal class to help promote basic horsemanship and riding skills. The USHJA Zone 12 Horsemanship Medal Final (three sections held at 2', 2'6", 3') will take place at the USHJA Zone 12 Finals Horse Show, on September 11 in Anchorage, Alaska. Qualified riders will be judged over fences, on the flat and will take a written exam on practical knowledge.

Participants can earn scores over fences and on a written exam at each of the five rated horse shows during the regular show season to qualify for the final. Each written test at the qualifying shows covers a different topic on horsemanship taken from the USHJA Horse Welfare Guide, USEF Rule Book and other USHJA program guides.

Zone 12 was also excited to once again host a USHJA Emerging Athletes Program Level I session in June. "We feel very fortunate that the EAP Committee selects Zone 12 as a host for one of the Level I Sessions," said Dana Eaton, Zone 12 chairman.

Zone 12 is also pleased to offer, in conjunction with the USHJA Foundation, scholarships to zone members. Scholarships are available for EAP Level II and the Trainer Certification Program. Zone 12 is also offering a general grant for other equestrian-related activities in amounts up to $1,000 to help support our members.

The USHJA Zone 12 Committee is pleased to announce a USHJA Zone 12 Horsemanship Medal for the 2011 show season. Riders can earn scores at each USEF-rated horse show in Zone 12 to earn an invitation to the Horsemanship Medal Final which will be held at the Zone 12 Finals September 11, 2011.

Three divisions will be offered: 2'0", 2'6" and 3'0". Each division winner will receive a monogrammed letter jacket while runners-up will receive an embroidered logo jacket; other participants will receive an embroidered logo vest.

During the regular horse show season, riders will have the opportunity to earn scores at each horse show. Scores will be awarded on a written test, a flat class and an over fences class. Scores will be weighted as follows: 40% written, 30% flat phase and 30% over fences phase to determine a total show score. The top three show scores earned will count towards 60% of the final score.

During the Medal Final at the USHJA Zone 12 Finals, riders will earn a score on a practical test, written test, flat class and over fences class. The written test questions will be taken from tests used during the regular show season. The score earned in the Medal Final will be weighted as follows: 20% written, 30% practical, 20% flat phase and 30% over fences phase to determine a total Medal Final show score. This score will count 40% towards the final score calculation used to determine a winner of the Horsemanship Medal.

Riders will be asked to take the written test on Saturday of each horse show between 10 am and 4 pm in the designated testing tent. Participants will be responsible for making sure to take his/her written test during this time period. Once a participant begins the test, they must remain in the testing area until the test is completed. Exams are anticipated to take approximately 30 minutes to complete but there is no time limit for completion other than the 4 pm end time. Each exam will focus on a different topic. Riders will pick up an arm band from the show office that is to be worn in the flat class and over fences class of his/her choosing. The judge will award a score to each rider on his/her horsemanship in the arena for the flat and over fences class.

Study materials are available on the USHJA website under Zone 12. Study materials will also be available in the show office the day prior to the first scheduled day of competition during normal show office hours. When checking in for the horse show, please add the Horsemanship Medal to your entry form. No entry fee except for Medal Final on Zone Finals Weekend.
