Alfano and Extraordinary Take Win at Kentucky Spring Horse Show

May 19, 2010

Only one point separated the first, second, and third-place finishers of the $15,000 The Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA International Hunter Derby Presented by Dietrich Insurance. Triumphant over the class of 40 horse and rider combinations was Extraordinary and Jennifer Alfano.

The Derby was held in the Main Stadium of the Kentucky Horse Park, host of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, at the Kentucky Spring Horse Show.

Louise Serio and Sailor's Valentine took reserve honors, with Kelley Farmer and Rosalynn coming in third. Farmer took home the High Point Handy Award for achieving a score of 196 in her second round.

"I started riding Extraordinary in the Derby classes this year," Alfano said to Phelps Media Group following the win. "I have done four and he's been second in two, so he's sort of been knocking at the door. He is a quiet horse and he is really fun to ride. He has a great canter and a great rhythm to his canter, so he is pretty fun and easy to ride."

Alfano also piloted Jersey Boy to a 10th-place finish.

With the qualifying period for the 2010 Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA Hunter Derby Finals coming to a close June 1, horses, riders, and owners are making their plans to head to Kentucky in August.

The 40 horse and rider combinations competed over 12 numbered obstacles for the first round of the derby. The course was designed by Bobby Murphy and featured five 4’ options. Two rounds of competition occurred with the first round being judged on hunter style, quality, movement, and brilliance, and the second round judged on handiness of the round and brilliance of pace. Twelve riders advanced to the second round with 10 obstacles, the same five options, and an added brush fence that resembled a squirrel where each pair hurdled over the tail of the structure.

Alfano and Extraordinary, who is owned by Helen Lenahan, chose three options and earned a first round score of 181. Since Alfano would ride Jersey Boy in the second round later in the evening, she rode Extraordinary early in the mix. The pair earned a high score of 177, which moved them into the first place position with a total of 358.
