Peter Pletcher Dominates Texas Sport Horse Cup Derby
September 10, 2009
Lexington, KY – Peter Pletcher of Magnolia, Texas was a dominating force in The Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA International Hunter Derby this past weekend in Tyler at the Texas Sport Horse Cup. He took home $4,500 in first place prize money with Melanie Barnes’ Camira and placed third with Eva Bisso’s Westview. His third mount, Dominick, owned by Meridian Farm, was also a strong contender in the class finishing sixth.
Judged by George Morris, Ginger Black, Carol Dean-Porter and Dacia Johnson, the class saw 32 entries compete over the two derby courses for $15,000 in prize money. Camira and Pletcher made easy work of the first round classic course, going straight to the top of the field. They were followed by Courtney Calcagnini of Pilot Point, Texas on Ovation. Both of Pletcher’s other mounts, Westview and Dominick, finished the classic round in third and fourth place.
The handy round proved more of a challenge with its fence height and difficult track options. Jana Rodes and Dress Up who were sitting in fifth place after the classic round took first place honors followed by Ovation and Camira. Camira’s solid performance in the handy round was enough to clinch the overall class championship while Ovation settled for reserve honors. Ovation, a Holsteiner gelding owned by junior rider Taylor Reid of Pilot Point, Texas, finished five points behind the class leader.
As a 10-year-old mare, Camira is just coming into her own and has taken a liking to the derbies according to owner Melanie Barnes. “She just loves them. She puts her ears forward and goes after them,” Barnes said of the hunter derbies and natural fences. With Pletcher in the irons, Camira has competed in 10 derbies and won two since the inception of the class. Last month at the ASG Software Solutions/USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals, Pletcher rode her to a seventh place finish.
