Alfano & Jersey Boy Continue Domination
of The Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA International Hunter Derby

July 17, 2009

Jennifer Alfano and Jersey Boy continued their domination of The Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA International Hunter Derby series by winning the $10,000 Chagrin Valley Hunter Jumper Classic derby on July 11. Held at the Cleveland Metroparks Polo Field in Moreland Hills, Ohio, the class attracted 24 participants.

A veteran at competing in the derby classes, Jersey Boy jumped both the classic and handy courses in stride to ride away with the overall championship. U Pearl Harbor owned by Aalsmeer Farm and ridden by Maria Dritsas Rasmussen received second place honors followed by third place finisher, Sting also ridden by Alfano. Jersey Boy, a 7-year-old Hanoverian gelding, is owned by Susie Schoellkopf of SBS Farms in Buffalo, New York, and was bought two years ago as a pre-green horse. “We thought he would be a jack of all trades and I think he’s really found his niche in the derbies,” Schoellkopf says.

Alfano and Jersey Boy are the number one ranked horse and rider combination heading into the ASG Software Solutions/USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals that will be held at the Kentucky Horse Park on August 21-22. Horses are ranked based on the monies won throughout the 2008/2009 series. Together, Alfano and Jersey Boy have competed in nine derbies and won three classes including last year’s Chagrin Valley derby.

Besides Jersey Boy, Alfano has two other mounts entered into the Finals. Rock Star, owned by Bright Star 158, LLC in New York, is tied for the number two position with Robert Smith’s Castello. Alfano has guided the 11-year-old Warmblood to two derby victories in eight starts. The newest of Alfano’s mounts is Helen Lenehan’s Sting. A 10-year-old Oldenburg gelding, Sting has competed in eight derby classes and is the number 11 ranked horse in the Finals’ standings.
