Posse Victorious in The Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA International Hunter Derby
July 20, 2009
Lexington, KY – July 20, 2009 – Colleen Acosta and Posse put in an impressive handy round performance to clinch the overall win in the Colorado Summer Classic $10,000 The Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA International Hunter Derby. Owned by Chris Guthrie of Austin, Texas, the Colorado derby was Posse’s second derby start this year. Acosta rode the 12-year-old gelding to a tenth place finish at the Spring Gathering Derby in April.
Thirty horse and rider combinations entered the Sunday event and rode the classic course that featured natural obstacles reminiscent of the hunt field. Posse finished the classic round in third place behind Sue Takata’s Docle and Margot Snowdon’s C. Quito. Gayle Cox’s Dubari and Rex the Wonder Horse owned by Moral Masuoka put in solid first round performances to finish close behind Posse.
The top 12 horses from the classic round were then invited to negotiate the challenging handy course. The handy course included several jumps with height and track options. “Jumping out of the ring and then into another ring was the most challenging part of the course for us,” Acosta says, but the game gelding jumped the obstacle in style. “Posse is an experienced horse and doesn’t care what comes at him. He’s adjustable and rideable which makes him well-suited to the class,” Acosta explains.
Acosta of Flower Mound, Texas has been riding the Westphalian gelding for the past three years under the guidance of trainer Matt Cyphert of Woodhill Farm in Argyle, Texas. “The course designer did a great job and the courses rode really well,” Acosta says. “I’m lucky to have Matt and Chris’ support and to be able to ride a horse with Posse’s ability.”
Rex the Wonder Horse ridden by Kris Killam finished second behind Posse, and Dubari ridden by Will Roberts took third place honors.
