Information You Need to Know: 2010 USEF National Pony Jumper Championships

It has been brought to USHJA's attention that there is some confusion regarding the criteria for obtaining qualifying zone points for the 2010 USEF National Pony Jumper Championships.

Approved zone specifications supersede the USEF Rule Book for any specific zone's points. The Pony Jumper Championships is the only championship that allow children's jumper points to count when competing outside of an individual's home zone. For example, if the accepted criteria for the pony jumper section for your zone lists children's jumper at 1.00 meter, but your current zone specifications do not count 1.00 meter sections points will not count. However, if you compete in a different zone and that zone counts points for 1.00 meter your points would count towards the Pony Jumper Championships standings.

Please refer to the 2010 USEF National Pony Jumper Championships criteria and standings information of how points are calculated. You can access this information through your USHJA zone website under points and awards or by visiting the USEF website.

Contact Diane Popp, USHJA Zones Manager, dpopp@ushja.org for any zone related questions.

Recently Renovated - Zone Websites and Zone News

The USHJA has recently reformatted all of the zone websites so members can easily access zone and affiliate news, committee business, zone information, competitor information, zone specs, points and awards and a plethora of applicable zone hunter jumper information. USHJA has added a menu bar to the top of the page to better help you, the member, find the information you are looking for in an organized manner. Please visit your zone website today by typing in www.ushja.org/zone[enter your zone number here] for example, Zone 2 would be www.ushja.org/zone2.

Your zone's homepage is filled with recent news and will continually be updated. Many zones have upcoming open forums for the membership so be sure to check out the news page for upcoming events. If you know of local events that you would like placed on the website, please submit the contact's information and event information to Diane Popp, Zones Manager at dpopp@ushja.org. Zone committee members have been encouraged to submit news and updates to keep the membership informed at a local level. Many of the zones are still finalizing their websites so if you do not find what you are looking for check back soon or contact Diane Popp at dpopp@ushja.org with your questions.

Recap of Last Week's Rule Change Forum

By: Geoff Teal, Chairman of the USHJA Hunter Restructure Committee

An open rule change forum was held on March 16 in Wellington, FL where USHJA members, facilitated by members of the USHJA Hunter Restructure Committee, were given the opportunity to ask questions and voice their opinions with committee members. The forum, which drew about 45 members, centered on the recently passed rule changes and how those changes will affect the membership and the sport. As the Chairman of the USHJA Hunter Restructure Committee, I wanted to bring you this update.

It is refreshing when members involve themselves in the sport and take the time to share their thoughts and ideas. It is very important that we go forward from here, and make sure we implement what they had to say into what we do. Members are taking the chance to get involved and this is our chance to show them there can be some sort of result from their involvement.

In addition to myself, the panel consisted of Louise Serio, Open Hunter Task Force member; Tracy Weinberg, Amateur Committee member; Peggy O'Meara, Owner Committee member; and Charlie Moorecroft, Pony Hunter Task Force member.

The topics addressed included: money won, conformation hunters, high performance hunters, performance hunters, first year green, amateurs and owners, and pony hunters. In summarizing the topics addressed and the concerns of the membership, below is my report of the member's responses to the rule changes:

Money Won (GR1130)- This topic makes people nervous, but by the end, members understood that it really is not having a very big impact on how horses are qualifying at the moment (not much difference from the current point system), that the possibilities of moving to a money won system are staggering, and that the best thing at the moment is to leave things as they are and see what affects it has positive or negative on our sport. Those in attendance did not like that the money won from derbies was counted as qualifying money.

Conformation Hunters (HU106, 430-09) There were mixed reviews on this initially. When the panel explained that we were trying to reach some sort of compromise that would encourage more entries in the division the members seemed to accept it. Time will tell.

High Performance Hunters (HU107, 431-09) People are hoping this will work to make this a premier division. There was much discussion about getting further down the path of increasing prize money for classes where you have to jump higher. Those in attendance liked the idea of fewer classes in the division in some places and also the ability to enter individual classes.

Performance Hunters (HU107, 430-09) Again met with mixed reviews, but upon further discussion the majority felt it would either become a popular division and replace others, or it would not and it would disappear. Those in attendance left with a better understanding that these divisions might be especially popular in other parts of the country.

First Year Green (HU103, 428-09) The proposed rule change that would allow for horses to start their green year at any time during the year was still not popular. Two good things came of this, first, those in attendance warmed up to the idea of the new divisions and using them instead of changing the first year rule. Secondly, those in attendance also came up with the idea of possibly being able to reinstate your green status at any time of the year, rather than just after showing through May 1 and then reinstating.

Amateurs and Owners (HU107, HU 114) Split right down the middle on whether or not amateurs should be able to show one horse they don't own in a division other than the amateur owner divisions. Members were referred to the amateur survey available at the USHJA website. Also, the members in attendance did not like the idea of a floating age split for amateurs, but when it was explained as an option, they were suddenly for it. This was great example of why these forums are good. You can correct a lot of wrong information as it is happening and before too much damage is done.

Pony Hunters (HU110.09, 279.09) Those in attendance liked limiting riders at AA shows, and they were not at all excited about pony kids doing the derby but seemed to get comfortable with it as we went along. The pony committee is considering a division for large ponies to jump 2'9", not 3', which is currently in existence.

Anytime the USHJA leadership puts itself and its representatives in the field it is a good thing for everyone involved. There was a wide array of constructive conversation at the forum. The people in attendance listened and learned quite a bit about what we have done, what we are proposing, and why we are doing both. We received some great feedback from members that will really help us decide where to go from here.

Please contact either Geoff Teal at gcteall@aol.com or Melanie Fransen mfransen@ushja.org if you have any questions.
