Alfano and Jersey Boy Claim Victory in the USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals

The fourth annual $115,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals, presented by Dietrich Equine Insurance, featured many top performances from among the country’s best show hunters, but it was Jersey Boy and Jennifer Alfano who were best of all.

Jersey Boy’s victory was especially sweet because after contesting the Derby Finals each of the past four years and winning the overall series title three times, it was the one major Derby accolade remaining for him to win.

The Exciting Evolution of the Derby

The 2012 Derby Finals clearly demonstrated how small changes can have a huge impact. The addition of the $15,000 Consolation Round sponsored by Moyer Farms and the change in the qualifying criteria took the Derby entries to an all-time high of 95 horses. From talking with exhibitors, it was obvious that the most significant factor resulting in this increase was the addition of the Consolation Round which allowed 30 horses and riders a chance to come back and compete over a Steve Stephens' Handy Course on Saturday afternoon. Of course, having a shot at winning some prize money was also a positive, but even those who didn’t think they were going to take home a ribbon or prize money were excited to have the opportunity to compete a second time.

Pre Green Hunter Incentive Program Set to Launch!

The Open Hunter Task Force began developing the concept for a program to encourage the development of pre-green horses late in the 2010 competition year.   2012 WCHR Finals Are Right Around the Corner!

Each year the World Championship Hunter Rider season concludes at The Capital Challenge Horse Show, when WCHR members from across the country compete head to head in the Challenge classes they have worked all year to qualify for, and vie for a national title. Several riders have already pre-qualified from either their final regional standings or their performances in last year’s Challenges. With four more regions yet to conclude and the chance to qualify out of the eligible hunter sections at The Capital Challenge itself, the 2012 WCHR Finals should make for an exciting week. The Capital Challenge Horse Show is held October 1-7, 2012 in Upper Marlboro, MD.

2013 WCHR Member Event Applications Closed. Voting Ballots Coming Soon!

A record number of applications have been submitted to host a World Championship Hunter Rider Member Event in the 2013 Competition Year. All 2012 WCHR members are encouraged to vote for the six competitions they would like to see as Member Events in their region for 2013. Starting September 1, emails containing a link to an online ballot will be sent to members in the four regions that have concluded their WCHR season. As each of the other four regions concludes, members in those regions will also receive the same email. Members have two weeks to submit their choices from the time the email is sent. Please speak up and vote for your favorites!

WCHR Member Events are determined on an annual basis by evaluating applications, membership votes*, selection criteria, geographical balance, variance of dates, constituency opportunity and USHJA WCHR Committee recommendations with final review and approval by the USHJA Executive Committee.

Rood & Riddle Thoroughbred Sport Horse Award

Each year Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital based in Lexington, KY, honors deserving former racehorses that are successfully making second careers as competitive horses. The biggest requirement is that the horse must have made at least one start at the racetrack. Rood & Riddle award horses in several disciplines, including Eventing, Dressage, Hunters, and Jumpers. From those honored one talented horse is selected for the overall award and this year that winner is a Hunter named Sea Walker. The 12 year-old gelding by Marlin/Shop is owned by Nicole Oliynyk who competes him in the Open Hunters.

USHJA congratulates Sea Walker and Nicole on this honor and wish them continued success.
