  2013 World Championship Hunter Rider Season is Here!

The 2013 WCHR Season Opener is scheduled to get underway January 23 in Green Cove Springs, FL. The first of 57 Member Events, all qualifiers for Regional and National awards and the WCHR Finals held during the Capital Challenge Horse Show. To be eligible to earn points and awards each participant must be a current WCHR member so if you haven’t joined yet please visit the WCHR Membership Page to do so.   Twice the Fun! WCHR East and West Coast
  Hunter Spectaculars

The World Championship Hunter Rider Program is doubling the excitement in 2013 with the addition of the West Coast Hunter Spectacular Week to be held April 18-21 during the Flintridge Spring Classic in La Canada Flintridge, CA. The highlight of the week takes place Saturday April 20 when the very best of the show hunters take center stage in a two-round Hunter Spectacular where professionals, juniors and amateurs compete head to head.

The Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular Week takes places February 20-24, during week seven of the 2013 Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL. Throughout that week, horses and riders compete to qualify for several awards and hunter classics, including the Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular, to be held in honor of Peter Wetherill, Saturday February 23, under the lights of the International Arena.

Both venues will offer an evening full of food and fun, complete with top-notch competition, cocktails and dinner.

Proceeds benefit the USHJA Foundation which supports programs such as the Horseman’s Assistance Fund.

  USHJA National Hunter Derby

Since its debut in 2010 the USHJA National Hunter Derby has become a show staple, providing an invaluable stepping stone into the International Hunter Derby realms. At the conclusion of each competition year USHJA recognizes the top 10 horses on the National Horse Standings list. In 2012, the overall national winner with $ 13,450 in prize money, Without Question owned by Ponies & Palms Show Stables LLC received an awards package from World Equestrian Brands, the awards sponsor of the USHJA National Hunter Derby.

USHJA congratulates Peter Pletcher of Magnolia, TX who topped the 2012 National Rider Standings with $24,350 in prize money.

Along with the national levels, the top six horses and top six riders from each of the USHJA Zones are also recognized for their accomplishments.

USHJA also recognized the top adult amateur rider in each of the 12 zones, with a helmet provided by Charles Owen, the Official Helmet of the USHJA.

  Pre-Green Hunter Incentive Program
      — Competition Heating Up

The USHJA Pre-Green Hunter Incentive Program was unveiled in early December. As the first of several participating competitions offered the Pre-Green Stake class, the Christmas Horse Show in Waco, Texas had the honor of debuting the program’s inaugural Stake class during the December 5 event. MTM Sundance with Kelly Lorek of Manchaca, TX in the irons rode to the win for owner Chris Guthrie.

As the 2013 competitions publish their schedules, the PGIP Calendar will grow as well. Several competitions not yet on the official calendar have declared their intent to host a PGIP Stake Class. This list of additional competitions is located in PDF format on the calendar page and will be updated weekly.

  International Hunter Derby — 2012-13 Series Continues

The second half of the 2012-13 USHJA International Hunter Derby series is well underway with just 24 classes left in the schedule. To date Jersey Boy is leading the pack having earned $49,700 in the series while Kelley Farmer has won a series-leading $105,950, to top the national rider standings. New for the 2012-13 series are regional standings, tracking money won by both horses and riders in each of the four regions: North, South, East and West. Both national and regional standings can be seen on the International Hunter Derby Standings webpage.

Qualifying for the 2013 Derby Championship runs through June 1, 2013, and horses that have won $500 in International Hunter Derby classes during the 2012-13 qualifying series are eligible to compete. Additionally the top three placing horses from the 2012 Derby Championship are automatically qualified for the 2013 Championship. A $750 entry fee will be implemented in 2013, 80% of which is to be added back to the $100,000 guaranteed prize money and paid out to award winners.

  Riders4Helmets to Host 4th Safety Symposium

The popular helmet awareness campaign Riders4Helmets will be hosting the 4th Riders4Helmets Safety Symposium on Saturday February 2nd, 2013 at the Alltech Arena, Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, KY from 8.30am to 5pm. The symposium is being sponsored by Tipperary, Charles Owen, Troxel, GPA, One K, Ovation and High Visibility USA (Equisafety). Contributing companies include Adequan and Triple Crown. For those who cannot attend the symposium in person, videoed sessions will be available on www.riders4helmets.com following the event. Attendance to the symposium is open to any member of the public, but individuals who plan to attend must pre-register in advance in order to avoid the $10 on the day entrance fee.
