The USHJA International Hunter Derby made its debut to the world on October 4 at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. Four of the country's top hunter riders, demonstrated and educated over 1000 spectators about the exciting International Hunter Derby. The course, which demonstrated the tight turns necessary for a handy hunter, a variety of derby fences and the hand gallop, was designed by Bobby Murphy.

The USHJA demo riders were: Jen Alfano and Jersey Boy, Peter Pletcher and Argentum, Louise Serio and Rock Star, Liza Boyd and Brunello and Tammy Provost and Peridot. Today's performance was with four of riders including fan favorite, Peter Pletcher who expressed his excitement about showcasing the hunters during the Games.

"It was amazing and I thought it was great. The crowd was so much bigger than I had thought it would be, and it was so much fun" said Pletcher. "It was such an enthusiastic crowd, the kids loved it and the autograph signing was a huge hit and all the kids were talking about wanting to ride hunters." Click here to read more.

The International Hunter Derby Demonstrations will continue throughout the week in Equine Village in front of the USHJA headquarters. Upcoming demonstrations will be held on:

Tuesday October 5 at 3pm
Wednesday October 6 at 4pm
Thursday October 7 at 2pm
Friday October 8 at 4pm
Saturday October 9 at 4pm
Sunday October 10 at 10am

Be Sure to Nominate for the 2010 Amateur Sportsmanship Award Before Time Runs Out!

The USHJA Amateurs Committee is seeking nominations for the 2010 Amateur Sportsmanship Award. The accolades for the Amateur Sportsmanship Award candidates must have been earned between December 1, 2009 - September 7, 2010. Double H Farm's Invitational
Training Session Raises Over $10,000

The Harrison Family's and Double H Farm's 1st Annual Invitational Training Session, held August 27-28, 2010 in Ridgefield, Connecticut, helped raise over $10,000 for the United States Hunter Jumper Association's "Building For Growth" Capital Campaign.

Designed as a 'prep' for The Hampton Classic, the Invitational Training Session was developed by Double H Farm's Cayce Harrison. Ms. Harrison, the newest member of the "Building For Growth" Capital Campaign Committee, along with her parents Jeanne and Hunter Harrison, graciously opened Double H Farm's Grand Prix Field to the public for the first time since being built. Individual schooling sessions, over a full grand prix and natural obstacle course, were scheduled over a two-day period.

Approximately 60 participants donated $150 per session to the "Building For Growth" Capital Campaign; a Campaign dedicated to raising the necessary funds to support the endowment of USHJA's new headquarters at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. Click here to read more.

Survey: Children's and Adult Nationalizing Specifications

The USHJA Nationalizing Specifications and Awards Task Force would like to thank everyone for taking the survey regarding zones having uniform specifications and for submitting comments. Of those who took the survey 91% voted to have uniform specifications across all zones and 89% commented that they would like to see national awards for the Children's and Adult Amateur Divisions.

Due to the large percentage requesting these divisions to have national awards and uniform specifications, the committee recommended that Proposed Rule Changes be submitted by the September 1 deadline this year so that these changes could be in the pipeline for 2012. The proposals submitted are not the finalized documents and will need amending. We are once again asking the membership to give us feedback so the committee will know how to proceed in finalizing the specifications for these national and zone divisions.

Please take this survey by October 15 so that data can be analyzed at a retreat planned for October 18.

Thank you for your input and any additional comments can be sent to Diane Popp, USHJA Director of Zones, Data, and Competitions, dpopp@ushja.org.
