Dr. Andrew Weiner on "Building a Great Culture: Organizing the Work of the Committee"

Dr. Andrew Weiner, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the graduate program of teaching, coaching and sports leadership at the University of Kentucky and has worked as a consultant for the USHJA since 2006.

In our last installment, I discussed the importance of meeting the psychological needs of volunteers. Today I want to continue to discuss some of the psychological dynamics that impact committee work. I work for several different organizations and my observations tell me that the way an association or organization is run is largely the function of the occupational culture of the members. Let me try to explain.

I work for an association comprised mostly of psychologists and if you know anything about psychologists, you know they are averse to hurting people’s feelings, willing to have extensive dialogue about most issues, and more concerned than most, about how people feel about their experiences in the association. Sometimes they will sacrifice task completion for team member satisfaction and in my role, as consultant, I find resistance when I try to impose deadlines and schedules upon their project work. They may even accuse me of trying to over control activities rather than what I would perceive as facilitating efficiency. That is their world view of association work and it largely based on the culture of their profession.
