Dr. Andrew Weiner on "Organizing Committee Work as Projects"
Dr. Andrew Weiner, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the graduate program of teaching, coaching and sports leadership at the University of Kentucky and has worked as a consultant for the USHJA since 2006.
Every organization that I work for would say that a significant portion of their work involves initiating and completing various types of projects. While I agree with them, I also find that this common thread begins to unravel when we examine how those projects are managed. Some organizations manage their projects efficiently, which means reaching desired outcomes with a minimal consumption of resources, while some manage their projects effectively, which means reaching desired outcomes without regard for how many resources are used. Examples of resources are money, time and people.
Most organizations say they would prefer to manage their projects efficiently (unless they have unlimited resources) and in order to do that there needs to be a standardized system for managing projects. A standardized system allows communication across projects, better auditing regarding how projects are planned and executed and opportunities for large scale training in project management skills. In the next few installments of this series I will discuss project management, the importance of it and how it can be implemented in USHJA.
