Keeping Up
With the 2008/2009
ASG Software
Solutions/USHJA International Hunter Derby Presented by Dietrich
Insurance Featuring Walsh Harness & Saddlery
John
French and Tache Rouge reunite to score a victory in the $10,000 ASG
Software Solutions/USHJA International Hunter Derby Presented by
Dietrich Insurance Featuring Walsh Harness & Saddlery at
HITS
THERMAL, CA (March 15, 2008)—John French rode Tache Rouge to victory in front of an energetic crowd on Friday evening in the
$10,000 ASG Software Solutions/USHJA International Hunter Derby Presented by Dietrich Insurance
Featuring Walsh Harness & Saddlery to kickoff an exciting
season-finale weekend at HITS Thermal.
French, from Gilroy, California, had the ride for owner
Alison Baileys and collected $3,000 in first-place prize money. "I knew
that horse would be super," said French. "Despite all of the obstacles on
the course, there was no way that he would be spooked. I hadn't been on
him in over a year and, thankfully, the owner was nice enough to let me
ride him."
A field of 35 combinations in the first round were trimmed
into a final round of 12 exhibitors who were asked to come back and
compete for a final test. The first round was a regular classic course and
the second round was a handy hunter course that included a trot jump,
roll-backs and option jumps, all under the lights in HITS' Grand Prix
ring. During the second round, judges were able to award bonus points for
brilliance and handiness.
French and his mount achieved the top score in both the
first and second rounds to secure the victory. He also was seventh aboard
Type Cast and 10th aboard Obelix. Rounding out the top-three finishers
were Lucy Davis aboard Clockwork in second and Natalie Rae Medlock aboard
Y2K took third.
"The class featured some great jumps like the post and rail
fences and wonderful rock walls," said French. "It was all stuff from
where hunters originated from and it was so much fun to ride
on."
The $10,000 ASG Software Solutions/USHJA International
Hunter Derby Presented by Dietrich Insurance Featuring
Walsh Harness & Saddlery was the second installment of the class during the
2008 HITS Desert Circuit. During DC III, Jenny Karazissis took the blue
aboard El Campeon's Swoon. On Friday evening, she was very competitive
finishing fourth aboard Aragon.
"We are delighted with the turnout of both horses and
spectators," said HITS' Vice President of West Coast Operations Fred
Bauer. "The people really came out in full force to support the hunters
and helped to make it a great event."
"The crowd made the class really special," added
French. "When I walked into the ring I felt the crowed
buzzing."

Rock on! Jennifer Alfano and Rock Star roar in the $10,000 ASG
Software Solutions/USHJA International Hunter Derby Presented By Dietrich
Insurance Featuring Walsh Harness & Saddlery Classic at HITS Ocala
OCALA, FL (March 16,
2008)—Jennifer Alfano rode Rock Star to victory in front of a boisterous
crowd on Saturday evening in the $10,000 ASG Software Solutions/USHJA
International Hunter Derby Presented by Dietrich Insurance Featuring
Walsh Harness & Saddlery at HITS Ocala.
Alfano, from Buffalo, New York, had the
ride for owner Bright Star 158, LLC and collected $3,000 in first-place
prize money. Alfano had a fabulous night, finishing the evening with three
horses in the money. She was fifth aboard Violets are Blue and eighth
aboard Sting. "All of my horses went really well," said Alfano. "I knew
Rock Star wouldn't be spooked by any of the jumps and not pay attention to
the lights."
"The crowd was excellent," added Alfano.
"A lot of people surrounded the ring. It was nice for the hunters to get
some attention."
The field of
48 combinations in the first round was trimmed to a final round of 12
exhibitors who were asked to come back and compete for a final test. The
first round was a regular classic course and the second round was a handy
hunter course that included a trot jump, roll-backs and option jumps, all
under the lights in HITS' fabulous Main Hunter ring. During the second
round, judges were able to award bonus points for brilliance and
handiness.
Alfano and her
mount achieved the top score in both the first and second rounds to secure
the victory. "The hunter ring in Ocala is always a lot of fun to show in,"
said Alfano. "That ring is beautiful. But it's even better under the
lights. Course Designer Rian Beals did a great job with it and had a lot
of fun building the course. It was great to have options built into the
course."
Also
excelling in the $10,000 ASG Software Solutions/USHJA International Hunter
Derby Presented by Dietrich Insurance Featuring Walsh Harness &
Saddlery were Mary Lisa Leffler and her mount Sam Adams, who finished
in second place and Mickie Sage and her ride Prestige who ended the
evening in third place.

USHJA Competitions Directory
Attention Hunter
Jumper Horse Show Managers: The USHJA Competition and
Facilities Directory, created by the USHJA Show Standards Committee, is
now live on the USHJA website. This Directory will allow show managers to
advertise their USEF licensed, as well as their unrecognized, Hunter
Jumper Competitions. As USHJA receives this competition data
from the show managers, a search function will be added to the Directory,
so that competitors can search the competitions based on specific
criteria. In 2009, this Directory will also be linked with the
Members Choice Awards; a program awarding competitions in several
different categories for excellence. This service is
completely free for Show Managers and will provide advertising for your
competition all year long. So don't delay, please include your
competition(s) in the USHJA Competition's and Facilities Directory today.
