Provost Wins Inaugural USHJA International Hunter Derby Class
Tammy
Provost of
Zionsville ,
IN won the inaugural 2008 USHJA International
Hunter Derby Class on Friday, December 7th, at the Lake St. Louis Holiday
Series, in
Lake St. Louis ,
MO
managed
by Tommy McIntyre. Aboard Daquiri, owned by Penny Cooper,
Provost soared to the top against a field of 27. The two
round format consisted of a handy hunter and classic round, which
asked competitors to navigate through the challenging courses of bending
lines, banks, and natural obstacles.
"USHJA
commends Tommy McIntyre for setting the bar in his creative efforts
and support of this inaugural class. It is through the support of the
competition managers that we are able to institute this ground breaking
program" stated Chrystine Tauber, Vice President of USHJA and Co-Chair of
the USHJA High Performance Committee.
The top 12
riders were provided with ribbons and prizes as well as an array of halters
and lead ropes provided by Walsh Harness and Saddlery.

The
USHJA
International Hunter Derby was developed throughout
2007. The goal of this program is to create a venue to
showcase the hunters and bring back the tradition and showmanship which
the hunters were founded on. The 2008 series will consist of approximately
30 classes across the country.

Shelby French Wins USHJA Volunteer of
the Year Award
Of all the awards
USHJA offers, it is the Volunteer of the Year Award, that we deem the most
prestigious. The 2007 Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Shelby
French of Sweet Briar, VA on December 13th at the USHJA Evening of
Equestrians Dinner. Shelby has been instrumental in developing grass roots
outreach programs, has traveled to theLexington office for
program meetings, has been a member of the Board of Directors, Co-Chaired
the Affiliates Council and Chairs the Community Horse Show Committee. She made it her mission to develop
the Affiliate Equitation Awards program and to see it implemented for
2008. Shelby is the Director of Riding at Sweet Briar College and
encourages her students and everyone around her to get involved to make
our sport better. Through the dedication of members like Shelby USHJA and
the sport of hunters and jumpers continues to excel into the future.
USHJA congratulates Shelby on this well deserved honor.

USHJA Affiliate Equitation Awards
Program
USHJA has implemented an
Equitation Awards program through its Affiliate Organizations Medal
Classes primarily offered at local and unrecognized horse
shows.
The goal of this program is to increase the USHJA membership
and outreach in the equestrian community, by further informing and
educating individuals who partake in equestrian sports at the unrecognized
and local horse show level and demonstrating that USHJA has something to
offer them through its many programs, and shared involvement with the
horse.
NEW MEMBERSHIP
LEVEL
In order to meet the needs
of this program and the members participating, USHJA has created the
Outreach Membership level - $15.00 which will include:
~A USHJA membership
card ~Access to USHJA information through a full subscription to In
Stride ~Eligibility for participation in the Affiliates Award
Program ~Eligibility for national recognition through participation in
USHJA sponsored Equitation Awards Program offered by USHJA Affiliate
Organizations ~Notification of USHJA sponsored clinics in their
area
PARTICIPATION
AND SPECIFICATIONS This Equitation Award program is offered to
organizations that are Affiliate Members of USHJA. Affiliate Organizations
may choose to participate through offering Medal Finals Classes at a
designated horse show or by using cumulative points through the
competition year to determine their year-end award winners. For
