USHJA E-Update
Are you a Young Professional Looking for Help on
Business and Training Issues? The USHJA Trainers' Mentor Program is designed to
provide young, up-and-coming professionals with access to top level
professionals for answers to their questions about teaching, training and
the horse business in general. The mentor/student relationship is private,
consistent and comfortable for both parties. It allows the younger
generation to learn all aspects of the business from the people with
experience. This program has great potential and we are asking for people
to become involved both as mentors and as applicants. A list of
professionals and mentors will be provided for applicants to choose from.
An applicant may also request an individual not on our list.
Trainer Geoff Teall commented on the program:
“The mentor program is possibly one of the best ideas to come forward
in a long time. I think it is important for young professionals to be able
to learn the ropes from the top people in our sport. I wish this had been
available for me when I was a young professional. I know that I have also
learned a lot from my applicants as well. It’s a great way to create some
long term beneficial relationships in our sport.”

Katy, Texas-After winning the Hunter Derby at Pin Oak, Peter Pletcher and Argentum took home the gold for the second time in 2 weeks, winning the $10,000 ASG Software Solutions/USHJA International Hunter Derby Presented by Dietrich Insurance Featuring Walsh Harness & Saddlery Class at the Spring Gathering Horse Show in the Houston suburb of Katy. The class was held under the lights in the main arena at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center. An enthusiastic crowd cheered their favorites as 23 entries competed over the first round track set by Patrick Rodes. The veteran hunter course designer commented, “Since this is the only time these horses show in this ring this week, I tried to create a fairly straightforward, classic style course for the first round.” The course incorporated lots of brush and natural obstacles and proved to ride well, with only a few horses incurring major faults. Two panels of two judges each scored the class. Scores were moderate until the ninth horse in the order, when Will Roberts piloted Jamie Jarvis’ Sidekick to earn scores of 85 and 86 for a two-round total of 171. Six rounds later, Tracy Fenny and MTM Farm’s MTM Namesake upped the ante with scores of 89 and 90 for a total of 179. Tammy Chipko and All That followed up immediately with scores 87 and 88 for a 175. Two horses later, Pletcher and Argentum matched Chipko’s total of 175, scoring 90 and 85. Peter rode Becky Gochman’s Tuscan Sun to wrap up the first round and, with scores of 84 and 87, tied with Roberts at 171. The first round ended with two ties being broken using the scores from the first panel of judges. The top twelve horses were then pinned and slated to return for the second round. The second round was conducted under standard Hunter Derby format. Returning in reverse order of first round scores, competitors were scored normally and then were optionally awarded up to 10 bonus points for handiness. Well known for his handy hunter courses, Rodes provided a second round test with plenty of handy options: multiple rollbacks, a trot fence, hand gallop fence, and a triple combination “chute” featuring a walk jump to a trot jump to a canter jump. The course proved too difficult for two of the first three competitors, who were eliminated and received no score for the second round. As the second round progressed, the rides kept getting better. Will Roberts and Sidekick scored 88 + 7 and 87 + 9, for a second round total of 191 and overall total of 362, leading the second round and overall scores. Peter Pletcher and Tuscan Sun then scored 87 + 9 and 86 + 10 for 192 and 363, taking over the lead in both. Tammy Chipko and All That scored 86 + 7 and 86.5 + 9 for 188.5 and 363.5, third in the second round and the overall lead. Pletcher and Argentum then scored 89 + 9 and 85 + 10 for 193 and 368 and the lead in both. The last to go were Tracy Fenny and MTM Namesake. The second round atmosphere proved too much for the 6 year old Swedish warmblood, and after incurring a refusal on course the duo scored 35 + 4 and 35 + 2 for 76 and 255, leaving Pletcher and Argentum at the top. Argentum is a 6 year old grey Oldenburg gelding owned by Alta Basaldua of Kingwood, Texas. Peter Pletcher is a 3 time World Champion Hunter rider, a native of Houston who resides in Magnolia, Texas. The class was graciously sponsored by his parents, Claudine and George Pletcher. Jennifer Alfano and Rock Star Capture Another Victory in $20,000 ASG Software Solutions/USHJA International Hunter Derby Equestrian News Release Naples, FL - April 7, 2008 - Proving they are one of the top hunter combinations in the country, Jennifer Alfano of Buffalo, NY, and Rock Star, owned by Bright Star 158 LLC and Jennifer Burger, won the $20,000 ASG Software Solutions/USHJA International Hunter Derby presented by Dietrich Insurance Featuring Walsh Harness & Saddlery. The event was held on Sunday, April 6, at Jenny Sutton's Wrenwood Farms in Naples, FL. The High Performance Hunter class benefited the Naples Equestrian Challenge Therapeutic Center. This is Alfano's third win in the popular new hunter derby series and Rock Star's second. They won the event in Ocala, FL, this winter and were third in the $50,000 class in Wellington, FL. Yesterday's class featured two rounds over new jumps in the beautiful competition field, such as a rolltop, coops, post and rails, and a bank. Rock Star and Alfano had a great first round and received a total score of 179. They were tied for first place in points, but were awarded third place in the first round by the tiebreaking score of the judges at position one. The second round was a handy hunter round. Alfano picked up the gallop to the first jump and kept a consistent pace with good turns. Rock Star jumped every jump out of stride in perfect form. Alfano and Rock Star received unbelievable scores of 93 and 95 from the two judging positions. They received another 18 points for handiness for a second round score of 206. They won round two by 20 points. Their overall combined score for the two rounds was 385, which gave them the win in the event by ten points. Alfano was thrilled to win another hunter derby with Rock Star, who she said loves showing and competing in these classes. "I think that he is truly a show horse," she remarked. "He can tell this is a big event. He loves to show and do different stuff. I'm still constantly amazed by what a great horse he is." Alfano rode three other horses in the hunter derby.
She finished sixth with SBS Farms' Sting and seventh with SBS Farm's
Jersey Boy. Click here for more information on the USHJA International
