Washington State Hunter Jumper Association (May and June 2010 news)

WSHJA presented the 30th anniversary of the Spring Nationals show circuit: Spring National Inaugural April 7-11. Spring National Hunter April 13-18. Spring National Jumper April 21-25. The WSHJA Spring Nationals were made possible in part with the support of its sponsors. Silver level: Farpoint Farm Training Center, NW School of Animal Massage, Stirrup Cup; Bronze level: Legacy Hunters Jumpers Inc., Collinswood Farm, Pilchuck Veterinary, Equine Performance Institute; and Blue Ribbon level: Olson’s Tack Shop, HillCrest Training, The Gift Horse, SeaPrint, Inc.

As part of its member education program WSHJA launched its 2010 Horse Sense Series with a hands-on class teaching the basics of equine first aid.

From checking vital signs to how to recognize and treat common emergency conditions, members learned and then practiced on volunteer horses taking the horse’s temperature, measuring breathing rate, checking the pulse, assessing the circulatory system and verifying if the horse is adequately hydrated.

"Knowing what to do first if I come to the barn and my horse has an eye injury, an open wound or is showing signs of colic, gives me confidence that I’ll be able to help the horse in the best possible way until the veterinarian arrives," said Jennifer Naimy, WSHJA member. "Even if our horses are stabled at a full service barn, we owe it to our horses to know this information for ourselves."

The next class in the Horse Sense Series is July 11. Chiropractic and Acupuncture for Your Horse with Dr. Michael Salewski. Visit WSHJA.org to sign up

WSHJA delivers a top notch member education program, awards program and five shows a year on the backs of its volunteers. These WSHJA members are some of the best in their field and they liberally donate their expertise and time to making WSHJA a stellar organization. Truly generous, almost to a fault, these volunteers never ask for much in return. WSHJA is so grateful for each and every one of them.
