Zone 10 Jumper Monthly Newsletter - May & June 2010

Welcome to the monthly USHJA Zone 10 Jumper e-newsletter. Zone 10 encompasses both California and Nevada, and is one of the largest of the USHJA’s twelve zones based on membership, horses, and horse shows. There are almost 2,000 jumper members in Zone 10 and in 2009 there were 167 hunter/jumper shows.

Zone 10 WEG Riders Long Listed

Three Zone 10 riders have been long listed for this year’s Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, hosted for the first time on American soil at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. The Selection Trials for the 2010 Games was held Feb.25- March 7 in Wellington, FL. Nicole Shahinian-Simpson, Richard Spooner and Ashlee Bond represented Zone 10 in fine style as they made their bids for spots on the Long List.

Shahinian-Simpson and Spooner battled it out all week, claiming the top spots after Lauren Hough and Laura Kraut earned their spots on the Long List and discontinued participation in the competition. Although Spooner and Cristallo (Show Jumping Syndicate., owner) were number one for the third and fourth legs of the Trials, they slipped behind in the final phase of the competition when they dropped two rails (ending with 14 faults), giving way to Shahinian-Simpson aboard Tristan (Ilan Ferder, owner). She posted a clear round, her third of the Trials, for a total of nine faults. Both of the riders earned a place on the United States team’s Long List and the opportunity to compete with other top riders in Europe this summer for a chance at the Short List.

Ashlee Bond rode Chivas Z (Little Valley Farm, owner) to two clear rounds during the Trials, but also had several rails down on other days and ended in 13th place with 31 faults. She was named as an alternate to the Long List.

Shahinian-Simpson was very happy with her results. "It was good for my confidence in us as a team that we can be a contender," she said. She noted she has been happy with how Tristan has come along in his training, progressing at the right speed and peaking at the right time. She has only been riding the 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood since May 2009. Click here to read the rest of this story.
