Zone 10 Jumper News
Larry Langer - Chairman
May 2007
Jumper action is underway in our Zone and many shows are bigger
than ever. Have you noticed that more shows are adding a jumper
ring? Our sport is thriving and interest is growing in the jumper
ranks.
Your Zone 10 Jumper Committee has held several meetings, and we
are working on a variety of projects and activities. One of our
goals is to provide Zone 10 hunter and jumper members with timely
and regular news of Zone 10 jumper activities. Regular Zone 10 Jumper
News e-mail updates and information are on the Zone 10 Jumper page
on the USHJA website at: http://www.ushja.org/committees/jumper_zone10.shtml.
World Cup Finals
Once again, Las Vegas Events did an outstanding job with the World
Cup Finals. The best of dressage and the best of show jumping were
showcased in front of sellout crowds in the Thomas & Mack Arena.
Many Zone 10 members were on hand in many capacities. Of course
we were well represented by the West Coast Riders: Richard Spooner,
Mandy Porter, Jill Humphrey and Rich Fellers (OR). Robert Ridland
and Stephanie Wheeler and their team ran the show jumping component
of the competition, many of us served as officials and staff, others
reported on the event, and many of you came to cheer for your favorite
horses and riders. Unfortunately we did not have any top placed
riders, but plans are afoot to change that.
The Super League
The Samsung Super League is one of the most important competitions
our country participates in annually. Only the top eight countries
are eligible to compete at the most premier shows in the Nations
Cup Competition. U.S. Chef d'Equipe George Morris has been instrumental
in ensuring our success. Two years ago the United States won the
Super League and last year we finished second. I am proud to announce
that for the first time in a long time, a West Coast rider has been
selected to represent the United States in Super League competition.
Richard Spooner headed to Europe at the beginning of May to compete
in the first few legs of the Super League tour.
NAJYRC
Within our own Zone's borders, fierce competition is heating up.
Riders competing for slots on the North American Junior and Young
Rider teams have already participated in three selection trials.
The next trial is at the Memorial Day Classic, and then all riders
are required to participate in the final three phase trial at the
Oaks June Classic I (June 6-10).
Karl Cook holds the top two spots in the Young Rider Selection
Trials with Uno de Laubry and Notorius Utopia. Amber Levine is third
(Anna Karenina), followed by Callie Leyland (Tasman Bay), and Megan
Edrick (Kandel) and Aurora Griffin (Tucker) tied for fifth. Four
riders plus an alternate are selected for the team.
In the Junior Selection Trials Karl Cook also holds the lead with
Notorius Utopia. Saer Coulter is in second with After Dark. Annie
Cook (Valeska Van De Raapaarden) is in the third, followed by Chelsea
Wilkinson (Cavalier Knight).

Prix des States
The Adequan/ USEF National Junior Jumper Championships are held
each year during the Pennsylvania National Horse Show. Zone 10 has
a rich history of earning medals at this prestigious competition,
and I am sure that in 2007 we will field a competitive team of talented
horses and riders. Complete information and application information
is online on the Zone 10 Jumper page on the USHJA website. (See
the link at the top of this article.) Standings will be tracked
on the USEF website.
Pony Jumpers
The USEF Pony Finals has included a National Pony Jumper Championship
offering both team awards and individual awards. The complete information
packet and application are online on the Zone 10 Jumper page on
the USHJA website. (See the link at the top of this article.)
Foundation Awards
The USHJA has implemented a new awards program for 2007. The USHJA
Foundation Awards recognize horses and riders earning awards at
USEF "B" and "C" shows. Zone 10 has a tradition
of several circuits of competitive "B" and "C"
shows. All horses recorded with USEF will automatically receive
points toward the USHJA Foundation Awards. The following jumper
sections receive points: Pony, Children's, Adult Amateur, Junior,
and Amateur Owner.
Points are listed on the USHJA website at: http://www.ushja.org/awards/fa_zone10.shtml
