Program Introduction
|
The mission of the Emerging Athletes Program (EAP) is to develop complete
horsemen by implementing a system of identifying and nurturing talented young
riders and providing them with the support and assistance necessary to reach
their full potential. This program will facilitate opportunities for these
young riders to become industry leaders, as well as serving as a pipeline to
international show jumping competitions.

Due to the popularity and success of the inaugural year of the Emerging Athletes Program,
the USHJA has initiated some changes to the program parameters from last year. In 2010, the age
range for eligible riders has been changed to 16 - 21 years in order to further educate and
assist riders who are considering entering Grand Prix competition and/or entering the
equestrian field as a professional. Accordingly, the 3’ section has been eliminated and two
1.10m ( 3'6") and one 1.20m (4') sections will be offered.

Because the EAP committee realizes that the change in eligibility age for riders will
preclude our younger equestrians from participation in the program for the 2010 year, the
USHJA is currently developing additional layers of this program to address the needs
of those under the age of 16. This expansion of the Emerging Athletes Program will give
us the ability to eventually include far more riders than the program reached in 2009.
Participants in the 2010 EAP Level I Training Sessions will be selected primarily on both their
riding skills and general impressions of their potential as demonstrated in their applications.

Participation in the 2010 EAP Level II Training Sessions and the Level III National Training Camp
will be based on riding skills, general impression of their potential, overall horsemanship and
written test scores as determined during their evaluations.
The overall winner of the 2010 Emerging Athlete Award, presented at the National
Training Camp, will be given a scholarship for one month of advanced training. In addition,
one participant will be chosen to receive the Lee Taylor Horsemanship Horizon Award for
the rider who shows the greatest desire and potential to be the complete horseman.
